In January, NJBII member Long Beach Township (LBT) proposed to and was granted funding for Restoring Bay Islands for Community Resiliency from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF)- National Coastal Resilience Fund. The project will increase NJBII’s community capacity building and planning to conduct site assessments and create preliminary designs for five bay islands with the dual purpose of ecological health and community resilience. The Bay Island Restoration Planner (BIRP) was used to identify five islands with the greatest restoration potential. Islands that buffer Long Beach Township were prioritized so that the restoration work will provide flood risk reduction to LBT. Community engagement is paramount to this process and will be centered from the Long Beach Township Marine Education Field Station in the Holgate section of Township. Follow the LBT Field Station on Instagram or visit the website for more information.
